Huerto de los Leones. Alcalá de Henares

The presentation of the selected projects and project winners for the International Architecture Competition for Women from Mediterranean Countries and the European Union, was the principal aim for this spring encounter.

THE SITE: "Huerto de los Leones", a square in the historical city of Alcalá de Henares (Madrid), a city recently declared by the Heritage for Humanity,  (UNESCO).

ORGANIZED BY: UNESCO (Paris), Women General Direction of Madrid Community and Alcalá City Council.

THE IDEA: To reinforce the participation and involvement of women, in city designs, construction and management. In Wassyla Tamzali (former director for "UNESCO Mediterranean Women" programme) words " We have chosen the beautiful name of “La Plaza” because it appoints an emblematic part of the city where political bodies, cultural and social powers are assembled. We have chosen"Peace" because we think that a design of a city contributes to its own openness and helps to harmonize life among citizens regardless of their social class, culture or sex."
