RECIPE FOR "MAINSTREAMING"

What spaces have been designed from the gender perspective?

(Idea based on the recipe of the Italian group ARCI DONNA)

The city is an organised memory. Women are those forgotten by history.” (Annah Arendt)

The incorporation of women into working life is causing a radical change in the conception of daily life throughout the world. The cities and spaces that we live in are not ready to assume these changes.

Spaces designed from a gender perpsective (“mainstreaming”) are those in which the NEEDS OF EVERYONE living there are taken into account. It is essential for women to take part and be able to fully express their goals in the organisation and planning of the cities of the 21st century.

The Ingredients for a new city, which is better than the current one, in which all individuals enjoy the same opportunities:

EQUALITY- (mutual respect + affection + daily life + participation)

FLEXIBILITY- (contrasting opinions + different needs)

SAFETY- (reflection+ education+ planning)

MOBILITY AND ACCESSIBILITY- (solidarity + tolerance +difference)

SUSTAINABILITY -(environment)

Preparation: The ingredients are blended with LOVE, mixed into the DOUGH and placed in the mould, YEAST is added and the mixture is then cooked slowly.

The DOUGH is the desire for change, applying the “gender perspective”, the point of view of the women and men active in the city’s policy-making and planning and the CONSTRUCTION of living spaces.

The YEAST consists of the best practices, examples and positive actions that can provide society with a more human dimension, which we all build together and the place where we live.

Once the dough has “risen”, it is removed from the oven and left to cool, adding the ICING before serving.

The ICING is the revolution in the traditional idea of “taking power”; the birth of a true democracy in which we all participate; the beginning of a new concept of  the CONSTRUCTION of our cities.
